Welcome to the Daily Sandwich. Or not. One time in Paris, Paulina took a picture of me in front of a lunch joint called “Sandwich’s Club.” You have to hand it to the French - a possessive sandwich in a culture accepting of mistresses is a bold, conservative move. Complicated! We find the sexy panino to be much more straightforward.

Bibimbap from Spoon on Ashby in Berkeley. Sooo good. Also, kimchi pancakes - totally crispy and delicious. This was actually a meal for four. People kept coming by my desk and telling me it was so nice of me to order lunch for everyone. Probably because it looked amazing. But mostly because I looked like I had lunch catered.

The sisters are reunited, this time in Oakland where I now live! Paulina and I are busy unpacking and going to music festivals and napping, so in the meantime enjoy some pictures from recent dining out at Gather, Southie, and drinks at Ben & Nick’s. Pork schnitzel, tagliatelle with ragu and ricotta, sardines with pickled onions and avocado and meyer lemon little squirts, pork belly with fried okra, all of it super tasty. Oh, and shrimp and eggplant curry from Soi Four.

Two for one blog special this Friday morning because yo lady Nellie of perpetual instagram is on VaCaTion. I had some tacos for lunch last week from Tacubaya. Freshly griddled tortillas and pork sliced right off the roasting spit with chile-garlic butter coated elote. Pickled things. Words. More useless words.

Heartbreaking news! Maoz on Telegraph is CLOSING. No more reasonably priced falafel for you, Berkeley. Go drown your sorrows in a shrimp cocktail at Southie with a glass of Unti Vineyards Sauvignon Blanc (assuming you’re of age).

You know you have a good falafel sandwich when most of it is covered in salad bar and creamy garlic sauces, as much as I love me some crispy garbanzo-parsley goodness. Maoz on Telegraph Ave in Berkeley has a really good combo with a drink and sweet potato fries for something under $8, which is truly worth driving across town for. And the pita, the softness, the softness of our lives. Did I mention its unlimited salad bar? It makes it a great joint for students and gluttonous young working professionals.

Hello weary blog travelers. Might I interest you in a cup of Philharmonic Medium Roast from Philz with cream, and a Chocolate Thing from the Cheeseboard? Put your feet up on my virtual footstool. Put some of these socks on first. They’re so comfy, right? Ross. I knooooow.

The Chocolate Thing is the real name of the pastry; I’m not just being lazy. In France they make little log bread things just like this, I think they call them pain aux pepites de chocolat. They were my favorite pastries besides pain aux chocolat. You sense a theme here, right? Bread. Chocolate. Sometimes we’d put pieces of chocolate bars in between baguettes and eat them as school-sanctioned snacks. You know what kids get in the US? Cheese crackers with peanut butter in between them. I’d argue that both countries are equally weird on that front.

I hit gold right on my first bite: 4 chocolate chunks fused into a nugget of chocolate. It was a little too much chocolate so I had to cut it with some coffee and then I found myself dunking this brioche dough “thing” in coffee. Now I’m living in a lawless society. It’s cool. No thing can be not dipped. Everything can be dipped in something.

Signing off,

Nellie

Had a great dinner out at Gather (www.gatherrestaurant.com) last night with one of my roommates from Santa Cruz - Allison. Her birthday is on Saturday, so we decided to “go for it,” which was a very exhilarating feeling. Here’s a picture of the Vegan Charcuterie, which was:
· Black Trumpet - pine nut, miso, rosemary
· Carrot roasted in soil - citrus charcoal, Puntarelle, Watermelon radish, currants
· Winter citrus - pistachio, Chioggia beet, dill
· Brassica (cauliflower) - Ruby Crescent potato, King Trumpet, celery, nori
It was great, but their pizza was pretty amazing too – had green garlic on top with chili peppers. Our favorite dish was the grilled artichoke on top of farro verde, black walnuts, espelette pepper, and Kishu mandarin. Holy crap. I think it might have been vegan, too. So creamy and delightful with charred, perfectly-cooked artichoke. The mandarin added this brightness to the whole dish. Maybe they’ll give me the recipe? It was definitely a splurge, but I don’t eat out often and everything was done so well. Bonus points for the Bee sting cocktail, which was also delicious.
