Shakshouka (eggs in onion, pepper and tomato sauce topped with za’atar), smoked trout bagel sandwich, and pickle plate for Sunday brunch. All very delicious, from Beauty’s Bagels in Oakland on Telegraph. I didn’t eat all of this by myself, but I kind of wish I had! Really good coffee, too.

I never had a Montreal-style bagel before this morning. Saul’s Deli on Shattuck sells Beauty Bagels on Saturday and Tuesday mornings until they run out. They (beauty bagels) are starting up their own shop in Oakland and were even featured in this month’s Bon Appetit! I had an egg and cheese on a toasted bagel, and I ate it in the car, sesame seeds sowing themselves everywhere, cheese grease running down my hand, Bay Area rain dripping against my windshield. I almost had to pull over because I though I was going to die from joy. The only thing that would make this sandwich better would be some thin or crispy salted meat (brisket?). I’ll have to try it plain with cream cheese next time.
